Course/Activity Information

Join Amanda Hartmann for the second session of a five-part Clinical Bite series on AAC. This session focuses on clinical practice when supporting clients with complex access needs, including physical and/or sensory differences. It explores the factors that impact access to AAC, the tools and options available to support these needs, support for communication partners, and practical AAC intervention approaches.

Pre-requisites

Please complete the following courses before attending this session:

1. AAC skills lab: Foundations for symbol-based AAC (On Demand recording available from Monday 30 March 2026) OR have attended Amanda Hartmann’s 2025 AAC intervention - practical clinical strategies for SPs workshop.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe key factors that impact access to AAC for individuals with complex physical and/or sensory needs.
  • Identify and compare AAC access tools and options used to support diverse motor and sensory profiles.
  • Apply practical AAC intervention strategies, including effective support for communication partners, to optimise access and participation.

Who should attend

Registrants must be speech pathologists. It is an intermediate session, intended for participants who have some prior experience or understanding of the topic. This level explores concepts in greater depth, applies knowledge to more complex situations, and encourages reflection and skill development through practical examples.

Presenters

Amanda Hartmann

Amanda is a Speech-Language Pathologist with over 25 years experience - experience which has led to a passion for working with children and young adults with disabilities. She has specialist skills and knowledge in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), literacy and technology. During her career she has presented on AAC and Assistive Technology to schools, organisations and at conferences both nationally and internationally. She currently divides her time between a busy private practice, as a consultant in AAC supporting teachers in classrooms, and at AssistiveWare. She also provides the AAC lectures to Speech Pathology students at the University of Queensland.
