Course/Activity Information

Join Amanda Hartmann for the first session of a five-part Clinical Bite series on AAC. This session focuses on the foundations of clinical practice when supporting clients with developmental disabilities, including symbol-based AAC considerations, communication partner support, and practical AAC intervention approaches.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the Clinical Bite, participants will be able to:

  • Describe foundational principles of symbol-based AAC when supporting children with developmental disabilities.
  • Identify key considerations for selecting and implementing symbol-based AAC systems within everyday clinical practice. 
  • Apply practical AAC intervention strategies, including effective support for communication partners, to promote meaningful communication.

Target audience

Registrants must be speech pathologists or speech pathology students who have undertaken relevant lectures, coursework, or clinical placements. It is an introductory session, designed for participants who are new to the topic or have limited prior knowledge. This level focuses on foundational concepts, key terminology, and basic practical applications to build initial understanding and confidence.

Presenter

Amanda Hartmann

Amanda is a Speech-Language Pathologist with over 25 years experience - experience which has led to a passion for working with children and young adults with disabilities. She has specialist skills and knowledge in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), literacy and technology. During her career she has presented on AAC and Assistive Technology to schools, organisations and at conferences both nationally and internationally. She currently divides her time between a busy private practice, as a consultant in AAC supporting teachers in classrooms, and at AssistiveWare. She also provides the AAC lectures to Speech Pathology students at the University of Queensland.
