About this item

Introductory level module for speech pathologists interested in developing their understanding of neurodiversity affirming practice and the underpinning principles.

Course/Activity Information

This is an introductory level module for speech pathologists who are interested in developing their understanding of neurodiversity affirming practice and the underpinning principles.

Participants will explore current trends in speech pathology practice in the context of the neurodiversity paradigm and principles.

The event will help speech pathologists understand the principles and theory underpinning a shift away from teaching discrete social skills and masking of neurodiverse traits and a move towards accepting both neurodiverse and neurotypical ways of communicating, as well as equipping communication partners to understand how to best interact with neurodivergent people.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • define neurodiversity and understand how a neurodivergent person may perceive the world, behave and communicate differently,
  • understand the umbrella of neurodiversity and some of the different neurotypes that exist,
  • describe the neurodiversity paradigm and the underpinning principles,
  • describe how the neurodiversity movement can inform speech pathology approaches,
  • understand the steps in the journey to becoming a neurodiversity affirming practitioner and identify future learning goals,
  • recognise the value in listening to neurodivergent lived experience and interact with neurodivergent individuals in an appropriate, beneficial and respectful manner.
