Course/Activity Information

Course overview

The Disability course, which is part of the SBS Inclusion Program, is designed to improve your understanding of disability in all its guises, and to show how employment options for people with disability can be improved and embraced. The course has been created in collaboration with the Australian Disability Network. 

 

The course should take approximately 1 hour 40 mins to complete and consists of four modules, including:

  1. Why Disability Inclusion (25 mins)
  2. Perspectives on Disability (15 mins)
  3. How to include people (30 mins)
  4. Building capability (30 mins)

 

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the Disability course, you should be able to:

  • Give examples of the many different types of disability that people can experience
  • Identify some of the benefits of employing people with disability
  • Explain the medical and social models of disability
  • Explain what ‘adjustments’ are, and how these can help to include people with disability
  • Explain the meaning of the initialism ‘ATP’
  • Outline how organisations can benefit from knowing the disability status of their staff, and how they can encourage employees to share this information
  • Describe how conscious biases may sometimes play out when a manager is considering the employment or progression of a person with disability
