A 2-part Clinical Bite on the basics of working with people affected by dementia, with a focus on communication.

Course/Activity Information

This 2-part Clinical Bite explores the basics of working with people with dementia, with a focus on communication. These sessions will focus on diagnosis, assessment and therapeutic support for both the person and the people around them. In both sessions there is 30 minutes discussing questions that were posed in the live event.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this Clinical Bite, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the speech, language and communication difficulties associated with different types of dementia.
  • Plan how to assess and set goals using a person-centered approach, with people affected by dementia.
  • Consider a range of therapeutic approaches to support people affected by dementia.

Who should register

This introductory Clinical Bite is aimed at speech pathologists interested in learning the basics of working with individuals affected by dementia, with an emphasis on communication.

Presenter

Dr Anna Volkmer

Dr Anna Volkmer is a consultant speech and language therapist and senior research fellow at University College London, UK. Anna has worked clinically across the UK and Australia. She now works at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London Hospitals where she specialises in diagnosis and support for people affected by dementia. Anna’s research focuses on the development and trialing of speech and language interventions to support people with dementia and their families.
