Course/Activity Information

Advances in critical care medicine has led to higher patient survival rates but increasingly complex comorbidities, including dysphagia. This module will discuss the swallowing profile of these complex patients and recent advances in dysphagia rehabilitation within the critical care setting.

Upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the clinical profile of dysphagia in critical care
  • Understand critical care factors/therapies that can contribute/complicate swallow presentation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of dysphagia rehabilitation strategies (including Expiratory Muscle Strength Training) and specific considerations for application in critical care
  • Identify key dysphagic characteristics in a critical care patient and postulate rehabilitation options

Dr Nicola Clayton

Dr Nicola Clayton is a speech pathologist with more than 20 years’ experience in adult dysphagia. She is recognised nationally and internationally for her clinical expertise and research in the assessment and treatment of complex swallowing disorders in critical care, respiratory disease and severe burn injury; highly specialised areas of speech pathology practice. She holds honorary affiliations with the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland.
