The available evidence for assessment and management of speech pathology issues in chronic cough will be summarised. Considerations for speech pathology assessment and management for chronic cough caseloads will be discussed, including exploration of the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches.

Upon successful completion of this workshop, participants will be able to

• identify current speech pathology assessment and management practices used for the chronic cough population,
• select relevant components for thorough assessment of voice and swallowing in chronic cough patients,
• integrate assessment findings into management plan for patients with chronic cough,
• plan interdisciplinary management actions for patients with chronic cough.

Presenter: Dr Phoebe Macrae

Dr Phoebe Macrae is the Deputy Director of the University of Canterbury Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research and a senior lecturer at the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Her area of research includes swallowing neurophysiology and dysphagia and defining the role of sensation in upper aerodigestive function. She was recently awarded a prestigious Rutherford Discovery Fellowship for a 5-year research program titled ‘Cross-disciplinary characterization of upper aerodigestive function’. This work utilizes her collaborations with respiratory medicine, physiotherapy, otolaryngology, and engineering to explore the links between respiration, swallowing and coughing.

Presenter: Dr Emma Wallace

Dr Emma Wallace is a lecturer in the Discipline of Speech Pathology at the University of Sydney.

Her research program focuses on enhancing dysphagia assessment and management across a range of patient populations and implementing dysphagia research into clinical practice. Her current research is funded by the Stroke Foundation and Sydney Health Partners.
