Course/Activity Information

Developed by A/Professor Anne Hill and Dr Simone Howells, this self-paced learning program has been created to develop speech pathologists’ knowledge and skills in designing and implementing a quality learning experience for students undertaking a placement.

The program is intended for speech pathologists at any stage of the supervisory journey.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • recognise the impact of what they and their student bring to the practice education experience,
  • set appropriate expectations for all stakeholders during the practice education experience,
  • describe features of a ‘quality’ practice education experience and how these features can be implemented and monitored in the workplace,
  • Describe complexities that may impact on placement learning and how these may be managed.

Associate Professor Anne Hill
Anne Hill is an Honorary Associate Professor in Speech Pathology in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Queensland (UQ). Anne is a certified practising speech pathologist with extensive clinical experience in a range of practice contexts in Australia and the UK.
Anne’s PhD explored the use of simulation to support students’ development of foundation clinical skills. Her roles in the area of practice education have included leadership of the UQ speech pathology clinical education team, Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Education Collaborative in Speech Language Pathology and founding Chairperson of the Queensland Speech Pathology Clinical Education Collaborative. Anne is an active researcher in teaching and learning practices associated with students in the health sciences and has a keen interest in the areas of simulation pedagogy, interprofessional education and students’ development of cultural responsiveness through their clinical practice.
 
Dr Simone Howells
Simone Howells is the Clinical Education Coordinator and a Senior Lecturer in the speech pathology program at Griffith University. She is a certified practising speech pathologist and completed a Bachelor of Speech Pathology with first class Honours from the University of Queensland in 2009 and a Doctor of Philosophy at Griffith University in 2020. Simone has also completed post-graduate study in the field of clinical education.
<p>Simone has a particular research and teaching interest in the education and training of health professional students and early career clinicians. Simone has held various clinical education leadership roles at local, state and national levels, mostly recently as Co-Chair of the Asia Pacific Education Collaboration in Speech Language Pathology (APEC-SLP). Prior to commencing at Griffith, Simone worked in clinical roles in Australia and the United Kingdom, with both adult and paediatric populations. Simone brings to her role a passion for helping shape the next generation of speech pathologists and speech pathology supervisors.
 

This resource was funded through the Queensland Legacy Fund and is free to access for speech pathologists who currently reside or work in Queensland.
