External e-Learning program

Course/Activity Information

This external e-Learning program is not maintained by Speech Pathology Australia. The information is hosted on the Learning Hub for the benefit of members.

Overview

In 2019, the Australian Human Rights Commission commenced development of an eLearning program for health professionals based on the recommendations of the 2017 Australian Law Reform Commission’s inquiry into the protecting the rights of older Australian’s from abuse.

As trusted professionals, healthcare workers play a critical role in addressing elder abuse. They are well placed to identify signs of elder abuse through their established professional relationship with patients and/or clinical assessment.

The Abuse of the older person eLearning program is free and consists of 3 modules

  1. Understanding abuse of the older person and their rights
  2. Identifying, responding to, and preventing abuse of the older person
  3. Rights of the older person, power of attorney and the law, and organisational governance.

Learning objectives

Upon successful completion of the learning program, participants will be able to

  • define the various forms of elder abuse,
  • identify signs and risk factors for elder abuse, recognising that elder abuse situations are often complex,
  • assess elder abuse using different support mechanisms and communication styles,
  • provide support to older people to mitigate risks associated with abuse and refer them to advocacy networks & other support services, where appropriate,
  • respond appropriately to signs of abuse,
  • interpret the empowerment model and multidisciplinary responses to elder abuse,
  • contribute to building the capacity of your organisation on the effects of ageism, language and the rights of self-determination of older Australians.
