Overview

In this webisode, Helen Smith (Senior member on the Association's Ethics Board),Trish Johnson (Manager Ethics and Professional Issues) and Nadia Marussinszky (Ethics Advisor) discuss the values and principles that the 2020 Code of Ethics embodies.

Ms Helen Smith BAppSc, MSc, FSPA,CPSP

Helen Smith is currently a Senior member of the Speech Pathology Australia Ethics Board. She has been on the Ethics Board in various roles since 2008.

Her professional interests include clinical and research ethics, palliative care, clinical education, professional supervision and mentoring, and leadership. She has presented and published in several of these areas.

Helen has worked in clinical speech pathology positions in metropolitan, rural and remote settings (including the Aboriginal APY Lands of SA) within Australia and overseas including Canada, Scotland and Zimbabwe. She has been responsible for delivering direct clinical services (to adults and children), clinical education, research, and community education/health promotion. She has been a manager and senior manager of large and small speech pathology departments and teams mainly within the health context. She is currently working as a manager of two non-speech pathology health services within the Central Adelaide Local Health Network

Helen was on the 2019-20 committee tasked with reviewing the SPA Code of Ethics and was a champion for the inclusion of kindness in the statement of our values as a profession.

 

Ms Trish Johnson, Manager Ethics and Professional Issues

Trish provides advice and support to members and the general public regarding the ethical and professional conduct of speech pathologists. Trish also supports the Ethics Board in the education of members regarding the Code of Ethics and professional issues, and in the management of formal complaints. Additionally, Trish represents the Association on a number of national working parties and alliances, contributes to Association submissions and undertakes specific projects relating to professional issues.

 

Ms Nadia Marussinszky, Ethics Advisor

Nadia is responsible for supporting members with queries relating to common ethical issues, including appropriate content and strategies for members to advertise and market their speech pathology services informed consent, confidentiality, conflict of interest and other topics.
