Course/Activity Information

This course is recommended for clinicians working with voice patients with intermediate knowledge of anatomy and physiology of voice, and voice assessment.

This self-directed learning module is part one of a series focusing on voice intervention. The first module covers goal setting and treatment selection, and the second will address more specific therapy techniques and teaching strategies.

This module provides a very brief summary of the physiology of voice production and examples of voice disorders by way of introduction only. It assumes knowledge on voice assessment, and the signs and symptoms of a range of voice disorders.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the physiology underpinning voice production
  • Discuss a voice intervention framework for adults with voice disorders
  • Identify appropriate and specific treatment goals from a range of diagnostic statements and assessment results, to improve knowledge, skills and confidence in planning voice intervention for adults with voice disorders
  • Summarise goals and therapy approaches in report writing
  • Describe the physiological targets of a range of voice therapy techniques for adults with voice disorders
  • Select appropriate voice intervention techniques to target a range of functional and physiological therapy goals for adults with voice disorders.
Dr Danielle Stone
Danielle Stone is a Clinical Specialist Speech Pathologist at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Danielle has 18 years clinical experience working across Sydney and Canada, specialising in head and neck oncology and voice disorders. She completed her Masters by Research degree in 2015, investigating the outcomes of transoral laser microsurgery for early laryngeal cancer. In 2015, she was awarded Best Allied Health Presentation for her masters research at the World Larynx Congress. Her PhD studies at The University of Sydney, investigated dysphagia and dysphonia in non-traumatic cervical spine injury and chronic pain. She is also the Australia/New Zealand Clinical Consultant for Atos Medical and the NSW representative for the Laryngology Society of Australasia.
 

This resource was funded through the Queensland Legacy Fund and is free to access for speech pathologists who currently reside or work in Queensland.
